system and of all pieces of in-ground sport equipment items where artificial
turf material must be installed up to or on top, is completed and meets
the specifications of the various suppliers and manufacturers, the project
specifications and the rules of the sport, and that has been accepted
by the ATC.
B. Installation is to commence and continue only if the
environmental and site conditions are in accordance with these specifications
and with the ATM’s current recommendations for installation of the
selected product.
C. The installation of the artificial turf system is to
comply with the shop drawing reviewed and accepted by the GC, with the
specifications herein and with the ATM’s specifications and instructions.
3.2 BASE ACCEPTANCE
3.2.1 Prior to base construction:
A. It is the responsibility of the GC to make sure that the base, inclusive
of the edging system and of all pieces of in-ground sport equipment items
where artificial turf material must be installed up to or on top, is completed
and meets the specifications of the various suppliers and manufacturers,
the project specifications and the rules of the sport, and to supply to
the ATC full design documents, as-built information and field test reports
confirming that the base meets the above-mentioned requirements.
B. The ATC shall provide technical services to review the
design documents, as-built information and test results supplied by the
GC and to inspect the base prior to the commencement of the installation
of the artificial turf system.
C. The ATC shall report to the GC any evidence that would
prevent the ATC from accepting the base.
D. The ATC shall expect that any and all defects of the
base be remedied prior to the commencement of the installation.
E. In the absence of any evidence proving the opposite,
the ATC shall assume that the base meets the project specifications and
the rules of the sport and it is therefore suitable for installation of
the artificial turf system.
F. The base shall be expected to meet the following criteria:
Cross Slope: Shall not exceed 1%.
Surface Flatness: Shall not vary from a true plane by more
than 6 mm under a 4,000 mm straightedge at any position and in any direction.
Surface Imperfections: Shall be free of surface imperfections.
Porosity: Shall not be less than 250 mm/hour at any location.
Vertical compaction: Shall not be less than 98% SPD at
any location.
G. The layout of the perimeter edging system and of all pieces of in-ground
sport equipment shall meet the project specifications and the rules of
the sport.
H. The base shall be clean and free from contamination.
I. The base shall accommodate the weight and in-motion
turning of the light motorized vehicles, machines and materials to be
used for installation and maintenance of the artificial turf system without
deformation, surface damage, loosening of granular material, etc.
J. The base shall be sufficiently flexible to provide protection
to the playing surface from the effects of subsoil movement and frost
heave.
3.2.2 Upon completion of the base, professional engineers on the account
of the GC shall:
A. Survey the base to determine if the layout of the field meets the
project specifications and the rules of the sport. Record on a plan of
the facility the position of the edging system at 30’ intervals
and the position of goal posts, corner flag posts, etc.
B. Survey the base to determine if it meets the project
specifications and the rules of the sport for elevations, slopes and gradients.
Record on a plan of the facility the elevations of the base on a maximum
30’ x 30’ grid of individual locations.
C. Visually inspect the base to determine if the base is
affected by surface imperfections. Record on a plan of the facility the
position and nature of all imperfections.
D. Perform planarity tests to determine if the base meets
the project specifications and the rules of the sport for planarity. Place
the 4,000 mm straightedge on the surface, parallel to the long side of
the field. Drag the 4,000 mm straightedge across the width of the field,
move it along 4,000 mm and repeat the drag back across its width. Repeat
again until the entire field has been dragged. Repeat the entire process
across the length of the field. Record on a plan of the facility any location
where a deviation is found exceeding the maximum permitted. The record
should also identify whether the deviation is a high spot or a depression.
E. Perform vertical compaction tests. Record on a plan
of the facility any location where a deviation is found exceeding the
maximum permitted
F. Perform porosity tests. Record on a plan of the facility
any location where a deviation is found exceeding the maximum permitted.

test reports to verify that the completed base meets the project specifications,
the rules of the sport, and the minimum requirement for installation of
the proposed artificial turf system as defined by the ATM’s current
published literature. The ATC shall inform the GC in writing of the findings
of the review and of any evident deficiency that might limit the installation
of the proposed artificial turf system or affect the quality of the installation.
J. Upon receipt of satisfactory as-built documents and
field test reports test results and prior to the commencement of the installation,
the ATC shall meet on site with the GC to visually inspect the base, and
to eventually perform independent tests for imperfection, planarity, etc.
The GC should provide a 4,000 mm straightedge to verify the planarity
of the base. The ATC shall inform the GC in writing of the findings of
the site inspection and of any evident deficiency that might limit the
installation of the proposed artificial turf system, or affect the quality
of the installation.
K. The ATC shall include in its price the cost of one (1)
site inspection. If any remedial work is required and is carried out,
and the ATC is to reinspect the base, the GC shall reimburse the ATC for
the cost of any additional site inspection(s).
L. The GC shall keep the base clean and free from contamination
by oils, dust, organic matter, dirt, mud, chemical agents, etc. until
installation of the artificial turf surface begins. The GC shall enforce
adequate procedures to prevent contamination of the base by work of other
craftsmen and trades, by site trespassing, by maintenance activity around
the site, by dirty rain water, etc.
M. No vehicle traffic should be allowed on the base until
installation begins.
